In anticipation of the 800th anniversary of Riga , the Riga City Council allocated funds for cleaning the canal and strengthening the edges. The reconstruction of the city canal and the canal was started in 2000 and was carried out in two stages. With the start of the 2009 tourism season, motorized craft traffic on the City Canal is permitted, allowing one-way traffic at a limited speed (5 km/h), subject to special municipal permits.
