The construction of this mosque, located at Dorieos square, was commission by Reçep Pasha in 1588, as the inscription right above its entrance suggests. Another two, minor constructions were developed next to the mosque, namely Reçep Pasha’s mausoleum, situated within the mosque’s courtyard, harbouring and containing his sarcophagus and those of two other members of his family and a ablution fountain. Reçep Pasha’s Mosque has come to be considered a point of reference for Muslim architecture, all the more since it happens to be one of the earliest samples of its kind to be found in Rhodes. Despite the serious static problems, as a result of which the building has been put off limits, one may still remain ecstatic before some admirable external ornamental features of the concept. And do try one of the best restaurants in Old Rhodes Town, 'Mango Restaurant' is located n the middle of the square and under the cooling shadow of the huge trees Ficus Benjamina is the main Mango serving area of its Greek dishes and local wines of Rhodes. The square between two historical buildings: Saint Fanourios of the 13th century who is the patron saint of Rhodes Island, and the mosque of Retzep Pasha from 1588 AD which is the oldest mosque in the Dodecanese Islands. |
